Large fire breaks out at an electric scooter charging facility in Fyshwick

Firefighters have extinguished a fire inside a battery charging facility inside a block of units in Fyshwick this morning.

Just after 10am ACT Fire and Rescue responded to reports of a structure fire on Geelong Street.

Firefighters arrived to find a fire inside a block of 6 units involving lithium-ion batteries.

A large number of fire appliances responded to the scene including aerial support to attempt to contain the fire to the unit of origin.

Power was cut to a number of surrounding businesses as the fire intensified.

Thick black smoke could be seen from surrounding streets as an exclusion area was set up.

Atmospheric monitoring was conducted throughout the nearby streets to ensure there was no harm to members of the public.

The fire was contained at about 1pm, firefighters are expected to remain on scene for the next 24 hours ensuring the batteries remain cool and do not reignite.

ACT Policing were also in attendance.
