Man armed with gun sparks large police response in the City

A 36-year-old Belconnen man is due to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court this morning on seven charges following an overnight incident which sparked a lockdown in Civic.

ACT Policing was called to an incident in Civic around 11.15pm Monday (24 August 2020).

Police cordoned off the area between Bunda St and Cooyong St and from Constitution Ave to Mort St.

AFP Specialist Response Service, Tactical Operations and Crisis officers attended to secure the area, and Hostage and Negotiation Operations (CHNO) officers attended to conduct negotiations with the man.

Police will allege the man pointed his firearm at the responding officers.

The man surrendered to police about 1.15am.

The man is expected to face the following charges: Assault Frontline Community Service Provider (2 Counts) Use Offensive Weapon – Dangerous to a Person (2 Counts) Possess Firearm – Prohibited Firearm Affray Act to Cause Public Alarm

Police are seeking the owner of a mobile phone they believe was taken by the man as officers first arrived.
