Firefighters respond to fire in Belconnen apartment block

Six fire appliances responded to reports of a fire inside a Belconnen apartment this afternoon.

Just after 5pm ACT Fire and Rescue responded to reports of a structure fire on Grazier Lane.

Upon arrival firefighters quickly made entry to the tower and forced entry into an apartment.

The fire is believed to have been a result of a candle that was left unattended and has then subsequently set off a fire sprinkler.

Significant water damage has occurred to Level 8 of the building as a result of the activated fire system, and around 50 people had self-evacuated from the building with several others asked to remain in place due to the flooding.

Fire crews remained on the scene for several hours clearing the floor of water and ensuring the building was safe.

Firefighters would like to remind the public about the safe use of candles, A FORGOTTEN FLAME CAN END IN A SHAME.
