A 23-year-old man has been located deceased after he went missing in the Murrumbidgee River this afternoon.

Just before 6pm, ACT Emergency Services responded to reports of a missing swimmer at Uriarra Crossing just west of suburban Canberra.

Crews from ACT Fire and Rescue, ACT Ambulance Service and ACT Policing initially responded to the scene followed by support from the Toll Southcare Helicopter and the ACT SES.

Firefighters, Police and SES crews searched the banks of the river for several hours, while the helicopter looked for any sign of the man from above.

Despite their best efforts, the man was located deceased in the water just after 8.30pm.

Police are expected to remain on the scene into the evening while investigations are carried out.

Parks ACT have the following safety advice on their website regarding swimming in our local waterways.

• Let someone know before you go and avoid going alone.
• Tell a responsible person where you are going, when you plan to return, and what to do if you are overdue.
• Always closely supervise children who are in or near the water.
• Know your limits: Consider your swimming ability and endurance before visiting our waterways. If you are unsure, stay safe by staying out and away from the water’s edge.
• Understand the dangers: Never enter the water in times of flood.
• Water depth in rivers and lakes can change suddenly, rocks and logs may be hidden below the surface, surfaces can be slippery, and currents may be stronger than they appear.
• Enter the water carefully and avoid diving in case of submerged rocks or logs,
• Check the weather conditions and be prepared for changes regardless of the forecast.
