Off-duty police officer injured following crash in Belconnen

An off-duty police officer has been transported to hospital following a crash in Belconnen overnight.

At about 9pm, police were conducting a mobile patrol on Beetaloo Street, Hawker, when they observed a stationary vehicle in a carpark and conducted checks, which revealed the vehicle to be stolen.

Police approached the vehicle and the vehicle left at speed, a spokeperson said they were unable to intercept the vehicle due to high speeds and dangerous driving.

At about 9.20pm, ACT Emergency Services were called to a two-car crash at the intersection of Eastern Valley Way and College Street.

Police observed the driver of the stolen utility in the overturned vehicle, who fled on foot. Police chased the man and found him hiding a short distance away, where he was apprehended.

The man was charged with breach of parole, drive motor vehicle without consent, dangerous driving, unlicensed driving and not stop at red light. He appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court today where he did not apply for bail.

The driver of the other vehicle, an off-duty police officer was treated by ACT Ambulance Service paramedics and transported to hospital in a stable condition and has since been released.
